RePLAY is a new feature on RPG Gamer where we do a playthrough of not so old RPGs. It may be considered as a review, just like our RETRO [RE]VIEW feature, where we remember some of the greatest classic Role-Playing Games. There couldn't be more appropriate way to start this feature but with Mass Effect, the first installment of the great Mass Effect trilogy.
You might find it hard to imagine, but there are plenty of gamers out there, who haven't had the opportunity to play this epic science-fiction, action role-playing game, and that's why we will start with some details first. Developed by BioWare for the Xbox 360 in 2007, Mass Effect was ported to the PC in Summer 2008, and PlayStation 3 in 2012 as a part of Mass Effect Trilogy (thanks Vernon for the heads up!). The PC version of the Mass Effect was developed by BioWare and Demiurge Studios, and published by Electronic Arts.

There are so many reasons why Mass Effect is so appealing, and if you haven't played it, then you definitely need to. A game made by sci-fi fans for those who love sci-fi, with a typical plot, covered in mystery that is so well thought out and told that everything clicks into place during the big reveal. The only "minus" points actually goes to a short story and a bit of a "racing feel" while playing. I know that we got a good ported console game, and that's why it is not so open-ended, but that story part is really too short. I've finished the game in about 15 hours, of course, I didn't do much of side quests. Reason for this is also hidden within the story itself, as you get the feeling that you're forced to play the main mission as quick as possible, or the whole galactic civilizations will go to oblivion.
It is always nice to re-play the game, and the Mass Effect definitely deserves every playthrough it can get.
The best thing about Mass Effect is it's cinematic. Tons of dialogs and scenes really boosts the replay value of the game. It is like you're interacting directly with some good Hollywood Sci-Fi movie.
It all started several hundred years in the future, as humanity has joined the galactic community after finding alien technology on Mars that opens up interstellar travel. You play as Command Shepard of the human Alliance military, and you can role-play as either a male or female character. There are pre-rolled characters that you can select or you can create a custom character with a unique face.
When a rogue Spectre, one of the galactic council's special agents, attacks a human colony on Eden Prime, you're tasked with hunting him down. The game then starts with the discovery of an alien artifact and ends with you rescuing literally every intelligent organism in the Milky Way from a grisly, violent death. BioWare offers basically two paths: the path of goodness and decency - the paragon or the path of ruthlessness - the renegade. To say more about the story would give too much away.

Despite the story is short, and you just want more of it, the game actually encourages you for another playthrough. You can beat the game and then start a new one using the high-level character you just used to finish the previous game with. This means that you get all the experience and skills that you finished with, as well as all the weapons and equipment that you have.
It is always nice to re-play the game, and the Mass Effect definitely deserves every playthrough it can get.
